In celebration of the third anniversary of the Fairie Goddess Mothers Quilt List, we were encouraged to enter a competition. The competition challenged us to make a mask suitable to wear to a ball, one that might represent the area of the country in which we reside. I chose nautical inspired by the beautiful Gulf of Mexico.
As I am still exploring painted Steam a Seam 2, I used this technique to construct the mask. The second photo shows the basic shape of the mask and some of the elements I made to add to it. Each starfish, shell, seahorse, etc. was constructed separately. I used angelina fibers, sequins, beads, trim, holographic thread and other embellishments to enhance the design. The scallop shell, seahorse and starfish are finished on both sides and attached to create depth while the conch shells around the eyes are stitched flat on the mask.
I was very honored to be selected as the first place winner. As a result of making this mask, I have been approached by members of a local Mardi Gras Krew and have been asked to consider a commission to make a mask. I have also been asked to particiapte in a local benefit for Hospice by designing and making a mask for them.
