A Story Quilt

Photo's of Laurenia the Merfairie are included with the next post.

Laurenia the mermaid lived under the sea with her family. She grew up with the other sea creatures and especially loved the dolphins. She would swim and play with them and became the protector of the little ones. Laurenia watched over the dolphins to keep them from harm and taught them games to play with each other. She and the dolphins communicated with their own special language.

As she grew older, Laurenia began to wonder what the world was like outside of her safe home under the sea. She asked everyone she knew from the largest, wisest whale to the smallest sea creature but none of them could tell her anything about the outside world.

Laurenia had seen big ships and little boats, storms, hurricanes and big waves but that was all from deep under the sea. As she grew older she began to notice that she was different. Something was growing, twisting and tingling in her shoulders. Something that looked a lot like the seagulls she flirted with on sunny days. Only she didn't have feathers but something more like the softest shiniest scales seen on the flying fish. One night when the moon was full Laurenia went to sit on her favorite rock out in the middle of the sea. She was out of sorts and full of questions. She gazed up at the moon and wondered why her back was so strange looking on some days and just like everyone else the rest of the time. While she was sitting on the rock she arched her back to relieve the tingling feeling in her shoulders and before Laurenia knew it she was flying. This was a strange thing to her and she was frightened. She returned to the sea and kept this secret to herself.

As the next full moon approached she realized she had wings again. Laurenia was less apprehensive this time and as the moon traveled across the sky, she realized she could follow in its path. Oh joy! Now she could find the answers to all those unanswered questions about the world. She spent a lot of her time sitting on her rock thinking of what she might see the next time the moon was full. She would hold her beloved babies in her arms and talk to them in soft whispers.

Laurenia was curious and eager to feel the pull of the moon in her shoulders and planned her first trip carefully. As she became bolder her trips lasted longer and the dolphins began to notice her absence. They began to worry that she would leave and never come back. This distressed Laurenia who wasn’t capable of hurting anyone. She swore she would never leave her beloved dolphins again but when the moon became full she felt the strong urge to flex her wings and fly. There just has to be a way, she thought, to let the dolphins come with me

Laurenia decided she would teach the dolphins one more trick. She worked and worked with them until they could jump gracefully out of the water while they swam. Now when the moon is full, look carefully for you might glimpse Laurenia in flight leading her frolicking friends across the seas. Listen to the wind and if you are lucky you will hear the dolphins calling out to her as she guides the way.
